ABOUT Catharine Pendrel

Catharine Pendrel is one of the most consistent women in the world on a mountain bike having stood on 39 World Cup podiums, won the World Cup overall three times, the World Championships twice and represented Canada at the past 3 Olympic Games, claiming Bronze this summer in Rio. At Rio 2016, Pendrel battled back from a crash very early in the race to finish on the podium with the bronze medal. Two weeks after the Games she won her third overall World Cup title.

Getting to know Catharine…

Family: Parents Bruce Pendrel and Johanna Bertin… Older brother Geoff was on the national downhill mountain bike team… Husband Keith Wilson is a mountain bike coach… Getting into the Sport: Started biking at 16 after riding horses before she could walk… Had been a competitive equestrian… Has wanted to represent Canada since seeing girls her own age trying out for the Canada Games as a teenager… Outside Interests: Enjoys travelling, languages and tasting fine food around the world… In the off-season enjoys cross-country skiing, baking and doing home renovations with partial success… Bachelor of Arts (psychology and sociology) from the University of Victoria… Taking anatomy courses online… President of Kamloops Bike Riders Association… Is a toastmaster… Odds and Ends: Nickname: Kika… Inspired by Clara Hughes for thriving on challenges with a smile… Likes to wear vibrant colours on race day as a small personal touch to bring energy… Before a race will visualize a lap with what could go right or wrong and how she’ll make the best of it… Always travels with good coffee for race day breakfast with oatmeal… Fave quote: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky…pic2

What is your biggest accomplishment in your mountain biking career?/ or career highlights:

Olympic Bronze in Rio! 2 x World Champion (2011 & 2014)

What one or two things do you currently do in your training that are keys to your success?

Ski in winter to keep mentally fresh and Keep it fun. I am focused when it is time for business, but I make sure the joy of riding is there every day

What would be a dream goal?

Keep crushing World cups into my 40’s!

What is your biggest challenge, and what do you do to manage this challenge? 

Ride more.

Serious answer…Probably life Balance.  Ensuring that the most important things are getting my attention rather than the time sensitive or more exciting distractors.  Requires checking back in with my goals often!

Where do you draw your inspiration from? Who are your role models?

Everyone one I am surrounded by. I draw a lot of inspiration from my competition, my family, friends, team, everything they do well and I would like to emulate.
